The Sega Saturn Backup Memory cartridge (also known as the Back-Up RAM Cartridge in the US or the Power Memory in Japan) was a means of saving game progress on the Sega Saturn video game console.
The Sega Saturn was a fifth-generation video game console introduced by Sega to the Japanese market in 1994, and to North America and Europe in 1995. The Saturn used CD-ROM as its main game storage format and although it did have a cartridge slot, this was only for a Backup Memory cartridge or a Sega NetLink modem.
The Saturn had a small 32 KB internal backup memory for game saves, and this information could be transferred to or from a Backup Memory cartridge using the console’s menu system. The Backup Memory cartridge offered 512 KB of storage.
The Saturn had some success initially in Japan, but was a commercial failure in the North American market. As well as competing against the Sony PlayStation launched shortly afterwards, it also found itself competing against the Nintendo 64 from 1996 and was discontinued in 1998. In it’s lifetime, it sold fewer than 10 million units.
